Coral With A Touch Of Gold

I was so excited when I got a request from Emily for a coral dresser. I have wanted to paint something in coral for the longest time. And when I found out that the dresser was for a sweet baby girl due in May, I was totally thrilled!

Emily was thinking a double dresser would fit her space and provide lots of much needed storage. Babies may be small, but they quickly acquire lots of stuff! ... After several weeks of searching, this one popped up on Craigslist. Let's just say that picking it up was an adventure that involved deep snow, a long and winding lane (turning around was not an option), a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, a police officer and a few K9 dogs!

The dresser was in relatively good condition and looked like solid wood, but it actually had a laminate top.

And even I can't believe how this worked out, but I just happened to receive a can of Kilz Adhesion  primer to try out the very same week that I picked up the dresser. This is a bonding primer made specifically for hard, glossy surfaces - perfect for my laminate top. And I love that it's water-based too.

My only prep was a cleaning with TSP Substitute and a very light once over with a sanding sponge to smooth the edges. The primer went on beautifully and provided the perfect anchor for the paint. I was already a Kilz fan. I use Kilz Premium on a regular basis. Now I have a great option made specifically for tough-to-paint surfaces. Thanks so much Kilz!

Emily is using coral and gray in her nursery and selected this yummy shade called Coral Expression for the dresser. I had it mixed in Behr Premium Plus Ultra in a satin finish.

And because it is still snowy and freezing around here, I painted this one in my sunroom.

I kept this one totally clean and modern, no distressing. And I finished it up with two coats of Minwax Wipe On Poly in a satin finish for durability.

Emily is using touches of gold in the nursery and asked if we could keep the original hardware, so I just brightened it up with a little Rub 'n Buff in Antique Gold.

This stuff is so easy to apply, just rub it in with your finger (gloves are a good idea) and buff it with a soft cloth.

I like to keep some of the original finish showing through so it looks a little more naturally aged.

I absolutely love the look of the gold against the coral!

I can't wait to see this dresser in it's new home. Yes, I am going to beg Emily for pictures of the nursery and of course her new baby girl!

Have I mentioned that I really love what I do!
Painting furniture is fun and meeting really nice people along the way - priceless!

I love what you did with the dresser! The pick-up sounds like it was horrendous but I am sure you client will appreciate all of your hard work! Love the gold touches against the coral. Thanks for the tip about the Kilz adhesion for the laminate finish. Now I don't have to say no to laminate surfaces!

I can picture this pretty dresser perfectly in a nursery. You did a beautiful job (as always.) The finish looks smooth as silk. I love painting inside my house, too. I DVR the old Golden Girls series just for when I'm painting furniture. The dialog is so funny, I can just listen as I paint, without watching the screen, and I just chuckle the time pleasantly away! Is that a little stool on wheels I see back in the corner? Brilliant!! I must have one!

beautiful transformation Sharon! I love the color, and Behr Premium Plus is my FAVORITE paint!

Did you mention?? is the Kilz water or oil based? I may have overlooked it.

Won't you be so happy when you can paint outdoors again? I know I will be so excited to use my Finish Max again. :)

That turned out really great! Love the pop of color. That is the same dresser design as one I had-I passed it along to my daughter and now she has passed it along to her older brother. Ours has the matching mirror. xo Diana

Kilz Adhesion ?? Where did this come from? Is it something new? Never seen it before. Hmmm. If that came in a spray can, it'd be perfect! (I'm lazy with primer!!) That is one gorge shade of coral. You really transformed that baby.

That's a great makeover. I LOVE the coral color! And, I'm so happy to know that there is a primer for the laminate. I usually pass over pieces because of that. I'll give it a try. Thanks for the info! Have a wonderful weekend.
